Let’s Get Involved with Universal Human Rights Month

Join us as we learn more about how December became Universal Human Rights Month.

Sadly, throughout history, there have been many instances of human cruelty, mistreatment, and violation of rights.  Whether this mistreatment was on the basis of skin color, nationality, religion, or even just unfortunate luck, people have been treated worse than animals on far too many times to properly record.  Universal Human Rights Month was established to remind us of the day in 1948 when the United Nations affirmed the basic human rights of every person on the planet.  This December, let’s learn more about Universal Human Rights Month and find out how we can get involved.

Following World War II when the atrocities committed by Hitler came to light, the United Nations General Assembly composed a document entitled the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”  In this document, the UN laid out basic human rights to education, freedom, health, dignity and so on.  The document goes on to emphasize how important it is to protect freedom for all, maintain peace, and most of all, keep people safe in the face of dictatorship, war, and so on.

In honor of Universal Human Rights Month, we invite you to get involved by trying out these suggestions.

  1. Acknowledge Our Prejudices: While this may seem counter-productive, recognizing our own prejudices is an important step in dispelling them. Whether we harbor secret prejudices against people of different races, religions, cultures, or so on, it’s vital to remember that at the core, everyone is human.  Recognizing the humanity in others is the first step in establishing common ground and working to dispel any prejudices we may have.
  2. Be Accepting of Others: This goes hand in hand with dispelling our prejudices. While it’s true that everyone is different, these differences do not make one person better than another.  By accepting others, we recognize them as equals and offer the respect that everyone is entitled to.
  3. Celebrate Diversity: Finally, the best way to celebrate human equality is by celebrating the diversity the world has to offer.  By educating ourselves about other cultures, learning about different religions, and finding out more about people’s histories.  This is a great way to foster tolerance, acceptance, and mutual respect.
