Let’s Improve Our Diets This Good Nutrition Month

How we might eat healthier this November.

As we settle into fall and temperatures start to get cooler, many of us are tempted to stay snuggled up inside and eat heavier and perhaps richer foods.  Additionally, with Thanksgiving around the corner, this is another excuse to want to begin the indulgence of the holidays.  While this may sound wonderful, this lifestyle is likely not an ideal way for us to live. If we are inclined, we may challenge this tendency as November is Good Nutrition Month.  This month suggests that we maintain a healthy diet to take care of our bodies and maintain our mental health.  Here are some suggestions that may work for us as we struggle with temptation this November.

  1. Let’s endeavor to make healthier versions of our favorite fall foods.  This way, we can kick our cravings without overloading on carbs, fat, salt, and sugar.  Suggestions include replacing high fat ingredients with low or no fat items. Perhaps cutting the butter or olive oil recipe suggestions in half?  Replacing yogurt instead of mayonnaise.  Flavor doesn’t have to be compromised, calories can be reduced!
  2. For those of us attending holiday parties, we’d like to suggest eating a balanced meal before arriving.  Having full stomachs will likely make it easier to avoid unhealthy snacking while at the party.
  3. Alcohol is one of the most empty calories.  If we are attending gatherings where cocktails and other alcoholic beverages are served, then we suggest alternating between a cocktail or a glass of wine with water or a low-calorie beverage to sip.
  4. How about staying social this November? The more we engage with others, the more likely we are connecting substantially with people who are near and dear to us but we may have lost touch with them this calendar year because of our busy schedules.
