Let’s Find Our Zen on International Stress Awareness Day

Here’s How We Can Honor International Stress Awareness Day.

The first Wednesday in November is International Stress Awareness Day.  As the name suggests, this day is all about understanding the negative effects of stress and encouraging people to develop effective stress management strategies.

The theme for this year’s International Stress Awareness Day is “Does Hi-Tech Cause Hi-Stress?”  Technology most likely plays a huge role in all of our lives, it’s important to consider both the positive and negative effects of technological innovations on our mental health.  Here are some of the things to consider for International Stress Awareness Day.

Positive Effects of Modern Technology

Probably, we can all agree that there are some major perks associated with technology.  For instance, modern technology may make our lives easier and may allow us to be more productive when utilized properly.  With a few keystrokes or swipes, we can do everything from looking up important information to ordering a new pair of shoes to scheduling a doctor’s appointment.  This is to say that technology affords us a considerable amount of freedom and ease.  As long as we use modern technology responsibly and in moderation, it can actually assist us to reduce much of our everyday stress.

Negative Effects of Modern Technology

Unfortunately, the pressures of an increasingly connected world can also have deleterious effects on our mental and emotional health.  As an example, technological innovations have introduced new social pressures and normalized a culture of constant posting and exposure.  Case in point, the rise of social media.  Social media users often feel the pressure of constantly posting and updating their followers about their lives.  Additionally, people on social media often compare themselves to the glamorous celebrities and social media influencers that post their fabulous feeds.  Studies have shown that active engagement with social media platforms can have negative effects on our mental states.  For instance, it can increase feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, isolation, loneliness, and even depression.

While there’s nothing inherently bad with engaging with social media and other forms of modern technology, it’s important that we do so in moderation.  Using technology wisely can remove a major source of social pressure and can help us reduce a considerable amount of everyday stress.
