Let’s Wish Eleanor Roosevelt “Happy Birthday” Today!

Today is Eleanor Roosevelt’s birthday; let’s all remember this truly remarkable woman.

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) was the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and gave birth to six children.  However, she was never content to simply play the role of wife and mother.  Instead, she revolutionized the role of First Lady by working as an activist, humanitarian, and civic leader.  Throughout her life, she fought on behalf of women, the American youth, black Americans, and the poor.

Even after the death of her husband, Eleanor continued her work by becoming a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly, appointed by President Harry Truman, and again by President John Kennedy.  To remember this true American icon and hero, let’s enjoy some of her most famous and inspiring quotes.

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.  You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror.  I can take the next things that comes along.’  You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

“With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.”

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”

Today, she is regarded as a leader of women’s and civil rights, as well as one of the first public officials to publicize important issues through the mass media.
