Let’s Honor the Legacy of – the International Red Cross

Let’s Celebrate the Organization of the International Red Cross

We’d like to share with you some important information about this humanitarian organization.

Today marks the anniversary of the first International Conference of the Red Cross in 1875. However, before this meeting could take place, it’s important to understand how the International Red Cross came to be.

The idea for the Red Cross was first conceived at the Geneva International Conference of 1863. Not only is this conference recognized as the birth of the International Red Cross, but it is also viewed as the impetus for developing the humanitarian laws of war discussed in the Geneva Conventions for the years to come.

Henry Dunant is credited with initiating this major humanitarian movement. It was his ideas about caring for the wounded during times of war and adopting an international agreement to protect the medical staff and those that were injured during wartimes that the International Red Cross was ultimately founded upon. When Dunant and his fellow committee members met with other representatives at the International Conference, they were able to convince these international parties to create their own national committees. Additionally, the Conference also recommended that governments support these relief committees, medical corps, ambulances, and military hospitals.

In modern day, the International Red Cross (ICRC) plays a major role in advocating for international humanitarian law and has repeatedly offered aid to address the consequences of humanitarian crises and conflicts throughout the world. The services of the ICRC is on the ground in over 80 countries. Now, in addition to offering protection for those wounded on the battlefield, prisoners of war, and victims of war at sea, the International Red Cross has vowed protection to civilians living under enemy control.

The ICRC has global partners that include the International Federation of Red Cross, Red Crescent Societies, and the 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. More information can be located at

Here in the United States, we have the American Red Cross which was founded by Clara Barton in May 1881. More information at to read about all of the great work that is done by the ARC both domestically as well as internationally.
