Let’s Celebrate Earth Day at Home!

Let’s make our homes more eco-friendly in honor of Earth Day.

With Earth Day (April 22) right around the corner, many of us may be thinking about ways that we can support the planet.  Fortunately, there are many things that we can do around our homes to make a difference.  Here are some of the ways that we can celebrate Earth Day at home.

  • Leave Our Cars at Home

Many of us may not think twice about jumping into our cars, even when we are only going a couple of blocks away.  However, what many of us may forget is that cars produce harmful CO2 emissions that hurt the planet.  To minimize the negative impact we have on the environment, let’s reduce the amount of time we spend behind the wheel.  By walking, biking, taking public transportation, and using carpool services, we can cut back on how much we drive.

  • Switch to LED Light Bulbs

Many homeowners continue to rely on standard light bulbs because they are cheaper than their LED counterparts.  However, LEDs are worth the investment.  Not only do they require far less electricity than standard bulbs, but they also last much longer.  Over time, homeowners actually spend less money on LEDs because of how frequently standard bulbs need to be replaced.  So, not only are LEDs the more environmentally-friendly option, but they are also better for our bank accounts as well.

  • Adopt Plant-Based Diets

One of the best ways to minimize our environmental impact is by cutting meat and other animal-based foods from our diets.  This is because the production of meat and other animal-based foods (dairy, eggs, gelatin, etc.) require a considerable amount of natural resources while also generating pollutants and emissions that damage the planet.  For those of us who feel that going completely vegan or vegetarian is too big of a transition, we can start out slowly by adopting a whole-food, plant-based diet a couple of days a week.

Seven ways to get started with a plant-based diet:

  • Eat lots of vegetables.
  • Change the way we think about meat.
  • Choose good fats.
  • Include whole grains for breakfast.
  • Go for greens.
  • Build a meal around a salad.
  • Eat fruit for dessert.
