Let’s Talk About American Heart Month

As many of you probably already know, February is American Heart Month. Did you know that heart disease, such as coronary heart disease, heart attack, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease, is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S.? It’s a pretty startling statistic, but it’s true.

There is some good news though. Heart disease can be preventable if you just take a few simple steps. For one, you should start eating a healthier diet that is filled with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and chicken. You should limit your intake of saturated fats, salt and cholesterol. Eating the right foods can help you maintain a healthy weight, lowering your risk of heart disease.

Another important thing to do is start exercising more. In addition to maintaining your weight, regular exercise can help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol. Try to work out for 30 minutes at least three or four days a week.

Also, avoid smoking and try not to drink too much alcohol. Cigarettes and alcohol can increase your risk of developing heart disease.
