Learning More About This International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Let’s learn more about the United Nation’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).

Since 1992, the UN has celebrated IDPD on December 3rd.  This year, the theme for IDPD is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.”  This statement emphasizes the importance of empowering persons with disabilities and creating the inclusive, equal, and sustainable society laid out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The 2030 Agenda is a plan of action to bring about a more peaceful and prosperous world where human dignity and equality are fundamental rights.  The Agenda was created to align itself with the ideological pillars that the UN is built upon: development, human rights, and peace and security.

The ideals of IDPD coincides with “Goal 11” of the Agenda that encourages communities around the world to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.”  In honor of this year’s IDPD, the UN will bring together international representatives, UN entities, Mayors, policymakers, civil society organizations, academic institutes, and organizations of persons with disabilities to discuss how this goal can be accomplished.
