Join Us as We Observe The International Day of Non-Violence

Spread a message of love, peace, and tolerance this International Day of Non-Violence.

In honor of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, the UN has designated October 2nd as The International Day of Non-Violence.  As many of us know, Gandhi was a leader of the Indian independence movement and considered one of the pioneers of the of non-violence philosophy.  Throughout history, we have seen many other leaders adopt Gandhi’s peaceful protest strategy and apply it to their own causes.  For instance, the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King Jr. are just a few of the influential figures who upheld Gandhi’s belief that change could be accomplished without the shedding of blood or the loss of life.

The International Day of Non-Violence was designated by the UN on June 15th, 2007.  In the resolution that officially announced this commemoration, the UN identified that the goal of this day was to “disseminate the message of non-violence […] through education and public awareness.”  Additionally, the resolution also states that The International Day of Non-Violence was established to celebrate “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and to “secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding, and non-violence.”

In today’s global climate of unrest and brutality, it’s more important than ever that we stop and reflect on the power that humanity carries.  While we can choose to turn down a path of hatred and violence, we also have the ability to choose acceptance and peace.  Though it may seem that our individual actions carry little weight, we have to remember that some of the most lasting and influential movements started with the beliefs and actions of a single person.  So, like Gandhi, it’s important that we all dedicate ourselves to sharing a message of love and tolerance.  Little by little, we can all do our parts to make the world a safer, more welcoming place for all.

We at The Maria Sanchez Show hope that you will join us as we get involved this International Day of Non-Violence.  Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown.  Tune in on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PDT/7:00 p.m. EDT.
