Join Us as We Observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

November 25 is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.  We invite you to try out these suggestions to get involved.

Backed by the United Nations, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women looks to end the global pandemic of violence directed against women.  This international day raises public awareness of the violence that women face in every country of the world.  November 25th marks the beginning of 16 days of activism, public awareness campaigns, and educational programs that culminate with Human Rights Day on December 10th.

In honor of this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, let’s all do our part to get involved.  We invite you to give these suggestions a try.

We can educate ourselves

While we might want to shield ourselves, violence against women is a very real and pressing issue.  One in three women will experience violence in their lifetime, with most of this violence stemming from intimate partners or family members.  In honor of this day, we should understand what violence against women entails and we should learn what we can do to protect the women around us from the threat of violence.

We can teach our children to respect women

Another important step we can take is to teach our children to support and respect women.  The values we teach our children will stick with them throughout their lives.  That’s why it’s so important that we teach them about the evils of violence and show them how to value women.  Taking the time to have a serious conversation with our children is a small way to make a big impact.

We can donate to support efforts

Finally, we can do our parts by donating to support efforts to end violence against women and girls worldwide.  Unfortunately, implementing the regulations and programs necessary to prevent violence against women requires significant resources.  The ability to foster non-violent environments has been hampered by insufficient funding worldwide.  In honor of this day, we can offer support by donating to this worthwhile cause.

This year, the United Nations Secretary-General invites us to “Orange the World.” using the color designated by the UNiTE campaign to symbolize a brighter future without violence. They are suggesting that we organize events and to use the color to orange our streets, our schools, and our landmarks.  What a visual way to make the point and to create awareness!
