Get Involved In Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Here are a few things you can do.

Thanks to the efforts of lots of dedicated people, the majority of Americans are aware of breast cancer. In fact, most have even learned to see the pink ribbon as a reminder of this disease.

Even though we’re aware, the problem is that a lot of us still don’t do anything to protect against it. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it’s a great time to actually take action! Here are a few things we can do.

  • Breast Cancer Check: A really great way to be proactive is to learn how to perform a breast self-exam and if you’re over the age of 50 schedule a mammogram. One in eight women will be affected by breast cancer, but early detection makes it extremely treatable!
  • Share Tools: Beyond The Shock, the National Breast Cancer Foundations’ resource for understanding breast cancer, is a great tool to share with anyone you know who has been affected.
Fundraise: Host a local event which can raise money and awareness for women in need—who can’t afford mammograms.
  • My mother is a breast cancer survivor. She had a mastectomy eight years ago and has suffered every complication that one can since the surgeries.  She is in chronic pain and has lymphedema as a result of her lymph nodes being removed – but she is alive!  Unfortunately, her cancer wasn’t detected soon enough so she wasn’t a candidate for reconstructive surgery.
