International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

Remember those lost on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The Holocaust marks one of the darkest periods in modern history. More than six million Jews and other minorities including Gypsies, homosexuals, disabled persons, and political prisoners, perished during the Holocaust.

To prevent such atrocities from happening again and to combat the denial of such an event, the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust was established. Every year on January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, we remember the victims of the Holocaust.

I have had the honor to know personally two concentration camp survivors.  They are identical twins, they just turned 90 years old last month, December 2016.  They wrote about their experiences in a book, “This All Happened In the Wide Open.  The Memoirs of Rita Kahane and Serena Rubin.”  It is a compelling story, and we strongly advise reading it.  They also participate in the World War II program at UCLA, here in Los Angeles.  They are literally, living history!

In their words, “We survived the Ghetto, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the death marches, several concentration and forced labor camps.”

Here are some suggestions how we can honor those who were lost.

  • Listen to Survivor Stories. By listening to and sharing the stories of those who survived the Holocaust, we can help to carry on the stories of those who were not as fortunate to survive.
  • Stand Up for Others. Whether we get involved in a grassroots organization or simply speak up for someone who’s bullied, taking a stand against an injustice helps to make our world a better place.

Participate in remembering the victims of the Holocaust with The Maria Sanchez Show. Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown. Tune in on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PST/7:00 p.m. EST.
