Honor National Bullying Prevention Month with Us

Let’s find out how we can do our part to stop bullying this month.

National Bullying Prevention Month is a national campaign held every October that looks to educate the public and raise awareness to recognize it as well as prevent it.  Over the years, this campaign has grown into a huge effort with backing from schools, major corporations, celebrities, and thousands of individuals across the country.  This October, let’s all do our part to stop bullying.

We can get involved by…

– Teaching our children that bullying is never okay: this month, let’s take the time to explain to our children why bullying is so hurtful.  Additionally, we can also encourage our children to step in and stand up when they see bullying going on around them.

– Learning about the different types of bullying: bullying is not always limited to physical actions; there are also emotional and psychological forms of bullying that are just as damaging.  Let’s take the time to learn about these different forms of bullying so we can better know how to prevent them.

– Practicing tolerance and acceptance: this month, let’s all make a vested effort to fight back against hate and discrimination.  There’s always time to make someone feel welcome and included.

– The statistics surround bullying are horrifying and include:

  • More than one out of every five students report being bullied, yet 64% of children who were bullied did not report it!
  • The main reason for being bullied, as reported by the students was for looks (55%), body shape (37%), and race (16%).
  • 1% of LGBT students were verbally bullied (e.g., called names, threatened) in the past year because of their sexual orientation and 55.2% because of their gender expression.
  • 64% of students enrolled in weight-loss programs reported experiencing weight-based victimization
