We Invite You to Discover More About the History of Walmart

Join us in finding out more about the history of Walmart.

We live in a consumer’s society. Everything and anything we need, we can buy at our local store. Walmart is perhaps one of the more popular stores to sell everything that we need in one place. In fact, Walmart has become one of the largest retailers in the world. We’d like to invite you to join us in learning a little more about Walmart’s history.

Mr. Walton introduced a then unheard of business orientation of his company.  He wanted to share his success with his employees.  He made them partners, and he believed that this unique relationship is what created the successful Walmart industry.

  • The first Walmart opened onJuly 2, 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas.  Walton was 44 years old at the time of the opening.
  • Walmart became a publicly traded company in 1970.  At this time, Mr. Walton wanted to take Walmart nationally, and he did just that.
  • In the 80’s, the Walton’s established the Walton Family Foundation.  Its primary focus is on the environment and education.  It is recognized for its outstanding generosity and philanthropy.
  • By 1990, Walmart was the nation’s number 1 retailer.  He passed away shortly thereafter at the age of 74.
  • Walmart went global by expanding to Mexico. Walmart’s retail stores, in partnership with the Mexican company Cifra, open a Sam’s Club in 1991.
  • Walmart founder, Sam Walton, earns the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.
  • The Walton’s are the richest family in America thanks to their possessive control over the world’s largest retailer. Seven heirs of founders Sam Walton and his brother James “Bud” own about half of the company’s stock.  I is estimated to be worth about $130 BILLION.
