Happy Birthday to Songwriter Ira Gershwin!

Happy Birthday to Songwriter Ira Gershwin!

There’s lots to know about this famous Broadway songwriter and today is his birthday.

On this day in 1896, lyricist Ira Gershwin was born in New York City.  Well known for his work alongside his younger brother, George, the Gershwin brothers are credited with creating some of the most iconic songs of the 20th century.  While Ira is remembered for the work he did with George, he also had a formidable solo career following his brother’s early death.

During his career, Ira Gershwin was the first songwriter to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize (along with George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind) for “Of Thee I Sing” (1931).  Ira wrote for over a dozen Broadway musicals and even took his talents to Hollywood to create songs for some of the major blockbuster films of the time.  For his work in Hollywood, he was nominated for three Academy Awards for “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “Long Ago and Far Away,” and “The Man That Got Away.”

To honor this incredible artist’s birthday,  here is a list of more of his most famous songs:

  • “The Man I Love” (1927)
  • “‘S Wonderful” (1927)
  • “I Got Rhythm” (1930)
  • “Embraceable You” (1930)
  • “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin'” (1934)
  • “Summertime” (1935)
  • “It Ain’t Necessarily So” (1935)
  • “A Foggy Day” (1937)
  • “My Ship” (1940)
  • “Long Ago and Far Away” (1944)
  • “The Man That Got Away” (1954)

Witty as well as creative, Ira is quoted as having said:

  • Nice work if you can get it, and you can get it if you try.
  • Old age adds to the respect due to virtue, but it takes nothing from the contempt inspired by vice; it whitens only the hair.
