Happy Birthday Muhammad Ali!

Happy Birthday Muhammad Ali!

Join us as we celebrate boxer Muhammad Ali’s birthday!

Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) was an American boxer and activist celebrated as one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century.  Born as Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky, Ali started training as a boxer at age 12.  By age 18, he won a gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and he turned professional at age 22 in 1964.  Soon after, Ali converted to Islam and changed his name as we know it today.

While known for being one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century, Ali also set himself apart as an example of racial pride and inspiration during the racially charged America Civil Rights Movement.  When he retired, Ali devoted much of his time to philanthropic work, earning the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.  Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1984, Ali passed away on June 3rd, 2016.

A wonderful side story in my life was when my ex-husband was performing in Las Vegas as Donna Summer’s opening act and Mr. Muhammad Ali came backstage to visit all of us.  At the time, we were parents to a toddler, I was pregnant with our second child.  My ex-husband, their father spoke about us lovingly and kindly in his monologue.

When Mr. Ali came back stage, he said, “where’s the baby, I want to hold the baby.”  I had our son in my arms and I gave him to Muhammad who held him lovingly, kindly, and gently.  I have pictures somewhere that recorded that moment in time.  May he rest in peace!

To remember this inspiring man’s birthday, let’s all enjoy some of his most famous quotes.

“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. His hands can’t hit what his eyes can’t see. Now you see me, now you don’t. George thinks he will, but I know he won’t.”

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”

“Don’t count the days; make the days count”

““It isn’t the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it’s the pebble in your shoe.”

“If you even dream of beating me you’d better wake up and apologize.”

“Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.”

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

“If they can make penicillin out of moldy bread, they can sure make something out of you.”

“Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn’t matter which color does the hating. It’s just plain wrong.”
