Happy Birthday Margaret Thatcher!

Happy Birthday Margaret Thatcher!

We want to acknowledge this influential and, at times, controversial leader in honor of her birthday.

Today marks the birthday of the first female prime minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher.  Thatcher (October 13, 1925 – April 8, 2013) was elected as prime minister in 1979 as head of Britain’s Conservative Party.  During her three terms, she implemented strict conservative policies, such as cutting social welfare programs, reducing trade union power, and privatizing certain industries.  Facing unpopular opinion and dissension within her party, Thatcher eventually resigned during her third term in 1990.  While often a contested figure, it’s undeniable that Britain’s so-called “Iron Lady” left a lasting political impression both nationally and worldwide.

She was the longest serving British Prime Minister in the 20th Century and the first woman.  According to history, Mrs. Thatcher was first a research chemist before becoming a barrister and then entering politics.  It was a Soviet journalist that created the moniker “Iron Lady,” a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. As Prime Minister, she implemented policies that came to be known as Thatcherism.

In honor of this strong woman’s birthday, here are some of her most influential and iconic quotes.

“If you lead a country like Britain, a strong country, a country which has taken a lead in world affairs in good times and in bad, a country that is always reliable, then you have to have a touch of iron about you.”

“If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”

“If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.”

“I’ve got a woman’s ability to stick to a job and get on with it when everyone else walks off and leaves it.”

“You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it.”

“Of course, to be a mother and a housewife is a vocation of a very high kind. But I simply felt that it was not the whole of my vocation. I knew that I also wanted a career. A phrase that Irene Ward, MP for Tynemouth, and I often used was that ‘while the home must always be the center of one’s life, it should not be the boundary of one’s ambitions.'”

“I’m back… and you knew I was coming. On my way here I passed a cinema with the sign ‘The Mummy Returns.'”

“I don’t mind how much my Ministers talk, so long as they do what I say.”

“I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they have not a single political argument left.”

“I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.”

“I do not know anyone who has got to the top without hard work. That is the recipe. It will not always get you to the top, but should get you pretty near.”
