Happy Birthday, Eleanor Roosevelt!

Let’s honor Eleanor Roosevelt’s legacy today, her birthday.

On this day in 1884, Eleanor Roosevelt was born.  Eleanor is best known for her role as First Lady of the United States from March 4, 1933, to April 12, 1945.  Through her human rights activism and her public service, Eleanor completely transformed what it meant to be the First Lady.

During her tenure as First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt took an active role in politics.  Not only did she hold regular press conferences, write newspaper columns, host radio shows, and speak at a national party convention, but she actively supported the Civil Rights Movement.

Even after her husband’s death, Eleanor continued to work in politics.  She advocated for the United States to join the United Nations, and became its first delegate. She then served as the First Chair of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and oversaw the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She also went on to work as the chair of John F. Kennedy’s Presidential Commission on the Status of Women.

Eleanor Roosevelt showed the American public that the First Lady was more than a wife and homemaker, and today she is still celebrated as one of the most respected and admired figures in history.

She also is credited with some famous phrases which include:

  • No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
  • You must do the things you think you cannot do.
  • The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
  • A woman is like a tea bag – you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.
  • You can often change your circumstances by changing your attitude.
  • Anger is one letter short of danger.
  • I believe that anyone can conquer fear by doing the things he fears to do.
  • Life is like a parachute jump, you’ve got to get it right the first time.
  • All of life is a constant education.
