Saturday was Girl Scout Day!

Girl Scout Day

This weekend gave us the chance to celebrate a great organization for local girls.

March 12th was National Girl Scout Day in honor of the first day of Girl Scouting in the United States: March 12th, 1912. For over a century, Girl Scouts has worked to bring out the power in every girl. There’s quite a lot for them to do, since there are currently about 1.9 million girls in Girl Scouts!

On March 12th, 1919, Girl Scouts’ founder Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low held the first troop meeting in Savannah, Georgia. 18 girls were in attendance. From 18 young ladies to today’s nearly 2 million Girl Scouts and the 800,000 volunteers who help to make it all possible, the mission of the Girl Scouts has remained the same.

The Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who help to make our world a better place is evident in every community.

Through activities and experience, Girl Scouts have the chance to travel, be entrepreneurial (who doesn’t love those cookies?), earn badges for their hard work, and develop meaningful friendships. Girl Scouts programs are designed to help girls find out who they really are, make relationships that really matter, and do something really meaningful to make the world a better place.

I was honored to serve on the Board for the Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast.  I resigned because of my commitments to Pepperdine University in my Master’s program in Clinical Psychology.  I was fortunate to see firsthand the marvelous men and women that help make this national organization so strong.

And a huge shout out to Academy Award host, Chris Rock, for his global message that he sent during the program.  Apparently the gag was true about the $65,000 raised but sources say that $2,500 was.  And, the profits are going to a Girl Scout chapter from Inglewood, not from the troop that Chris’ daughters belong to in New York.
