Fun Ideas for National Book Lovers Day

Fun Ideas for National Book Lovers Day

Let’s celebrate National Book Lovers Day with these family-friendly ideas.

Today is National Book Lovers Day and, as the name suggests, this day is dedicated to celebrating our love of reading.  While curling up with a good book is a great way to celebrate this day, there are also more interactive things that we can do to make National Book Lovers Day fun for our entire families.  Here are some of the celebration ideas we could try.

Read Together

Perhaps one of the simplest, yet best ways to celebrate National Book Lovers Day is by reading together as a family.  This could mean individual reading time or choose a book to read out loud together.  For those of us deciding to go with the second option, we should select a suitable book and have everyone in our family take a turn reading aloud.  Not only is this a wonderful way to enjoy reading, but it will also help our children develop their reading comprehension and oral presentation skills.

Take a Trip to the Library

Another great way to celebrate National Book Lovers Day is by taking the family on a trip to the local library.  This is a great opportunity to have our kids sign up for their very first library cards and encourage them to check out whichever books they are interested in.  With all this fresh material at their disposal, they will be excited to get reading as soon as they get home.

Lead By Example

It’s important to model reading to our family members.  If we don’t read in front of them, how are they to learn that reading is important?  An interesting fact about people who read, they tend to have bigger vocabularies and learn vicariously by following a story, whether it be fiction or non-fiction.

Serve Up a Literary Inspired Meal

Finally, a fun way to celebrate this holiday is by serving up a meal inspired by some of our families’ favorite books.  For instance, Dr. Seuss lovers might enjoy some green eggs and ham!  This idea is all about creativity, so let’s ask our family members to see which dishes they would like to pull from the pages of their favorite stories.  Heck, one of the books could even be a cookbook!  And once a week someone chooses a recipe from the cookbook to prepare for the family.
