National Book Month: A Real Page Turner

“Fall” In Love With National Book Month!

Curl up with a good read to celebrate National Book Month!

Reading is powerful. Through books, we can be transported to foreign lands, live life through another person’s eyes, delve subjects previously undiscovered to us, and more!

People might be concerned that nobody reads in our digital age, but that’s just not true! Think of how technology has transformed how we get our information and how we spend our idle time.  With all the tablets available for downloading newspapers, periodicals, tomes, websites, blogs, and videos, now more than ever we have the opportunity to read, read, read!

Nothing can overcome the blissful feeling of laying poolside with a good read, or curling up with a favorite book (turning pages or electronically flipping through a good read) on a rainy day.

As the fall chill settles in the air, it’s time to grab a mug of tea, a cozy blanket, and that book we’ve been meaning to read; it’s National Book Month.  During October, we can look for ways to “fall” into a good book by heading to our local libraries, our neighborhood book stores, downloading something onto our tablets, and, switching out family movie night for family reading night.

Reading has been proven to stimulate us mentally, reduce stress, acquire knowledge and vocabulary, improve our memories, help us create stronger analytical thinking skills, improve our focus and concentration, enhance our writing skills, and reading spiritual texts can lower blood pressure and bring about an immense sense of calm, while reading self-help books has been shown to help people suffering from certain mood disorders and mild mental illnesses.

Personally, I’m old school.  I subscribe to my daily local newspaper, I subscribe to magazines and I purchase and read books that I can touch and feel and linger over.  I also read 98% non-fiction.  Mostly autobiographies, some biographies.  To me, the human experience is much more compelling than someone else’s imagination.

Whatever your preference, let’s share this month’s campaign and set aside some time to R-E-A-D!

How will you celebrate the month? Let me know in the comments!
