Decoding the Diabetic Diet

Diabetes is a serious problem in the United States today.  Millions of adults and children are on medications and follow diets in order to control their blood sugar levels and allow them to lead regular lives. One of the best ways of controlling diabetes is through eating a diet rich in natural foods–foods found in nature, not from a shiny package on the supermarket shelf–and getting in plenty of exercise.

What to Eat if You Have Diabetes?
Some of the foods that people with diabetes should eat more of include: nuts, whole fruits, low-fat Greek yogurt, non-starchy vegetables, fish, foods rich in omega-3s and magnesium, olive oil, cinnamon and vinegar. Whole grains and legumes are also important foods that can help control the disease.

Foods to Avoid
Diabetics should avoid eating too many processed foods, refined grains, sugary drinks, fried foods and high-fat meets. Excessive amounts of fruit can also lead to complications since, although natural, many fruits have a high concentration of sugar.
