On This Day in History: Coca Cola Was Invented

Learn how, on this day in 1886, Dr. John Pemberton created the first batch of Coca-Cola.

When Dr. Pemberton created the first batch of Coca-Cola on March 29th, 1886, he thought he was creating a cure-all tonic.  His first batch was created using kola nuts for caffeine and cocoa leaf, and was supposed to treat a wide variety of medical issues such as indigestion, headaches, hangovers, and impotence.

Eventually, Dr. Pemberton’s tonic would be a failure in pharmacies, but with the growing popularity of soda fountains, he decided to use his creation to break into the beverage industry.  Pemberton created a flavored syrup and took it to a local corner store where it was mixed with carbonated water.  The drink was an instant hit with tasters and from there, a legend was born.
