It Is National Cord Blood Awareness Month

Cord Blood Awareness Month

July Marks Cord Blood Awareness Month

After a baby is born, the umbilical cord becomes useless to both the mother and the child. That does not mean, however, that it is useless to other people. In fact, the blood from that umbilical cord contains adult stem cells that can mature into healthy blood cells. The scientific community is currently researching the ways this blood along with its stem cells can be used.

Right now, studies are being conducted with these blood-forming stem cells in order to treat sickle cell disease, myelodysplastic syndromes, and severe aplastic anemia. In order to continue this research, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has declared July National Cord Blood Awareness Month.

During this month, cord blood awareness is encouraged. July provides the perfect opportunity to do some research on how cord blood can be used to make a difference in someone’s life and help spread the word about this important resource that is so often simply thrown away.

There are cord blood banks that store your newborn’s unique sample.  If you might consider this opportunity, you need to do some research prior to delivery so that the cord blood can be saved, shipped, studied and stored.  There is a cost involved as well so it is important to do the advance investigation so that you make the best decision for your family prior to the delivery of your baby.

At The Maria Sanchez Show, we are working to spread awareness during National Cord Blood Awareness Month and we hope you will join us!
