More Than Just Cookies: Observing Girl Scouts Day

Let’s learn more about this wonderful organization on Girl Scouts Day.

Today is Girl Scouts Day which marks the anniversary of when Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout meeting in 1912.  The Girl Scouts was born out of Low’s desire to encourage young women to spend more time outdoors and become more independent, self-reliant, and resourceful.

Today, the Girl Scouts have grown to include 2.5 million members in the U.S. alone (1.7 million scouts and 750,000 adult members and volunteers).  The Girl Scouts operate with the mission to “build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.”  This dedication can also be seen in the official motto laid out in the 1947 Girl Scout Handbook. The motto reads “be prepared,” which is explainedin this way; “A Girl Scout is ready to help out wherever she is needed. Willingness to serve is not enough; you must know how to do the job well, even in an emergency.”

Today, the Girl Scouts count many famous and influential females as having participated in the Girl Scouts program.  Some of the most well-known Girl Scout alumni include the following:
