If you’re Christian, you’re well aware that it’s time to deck the halls, trim the Christmas tree, and spend plenty of time with loved ones. The holidays are here, and it is time to celebrate Christmas. But, how much do we know about the holiday? We thought you might be interested in checking out these facts about Christmas.

Holiday History.

Christmas is unique in which a religious holiday blends with cultural traditions. Christmas, historically, marks the birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth who is believed to be the Messiah in the Christian faith. In fact, many of the religion’s ideologies are based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. The holiday celebrates his birthday. However, it also coincides with many pagan celebrations of the winter solstice. Today in the United States, Christmas remains a religious holiday. However, it has also become a cultural celebration.

Christmas Facts:

    • Rudolph “the red-nosed reindeer, ” was a marketing tool used in 1939 to attract more business to the Montgomery Ward department store. Rudolph was part of a poem written by Robert L. May.
    • Christmas became a federal holiday in 1870.
    • There are over 30 million Christmas trees sold every year in the United States. The average tree takes 15 years to grow.
  • After leaving Bethlehem, to which country did Joseph, Mary, and Jesus travel?  Egypt.
  • Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December. Who is the patron saint remembered on the 26th of December?  Stephen.
  • Every elf has this ornament on the tip of their shoes. Which ornament are we talking about?  Bells.
  • Everyone is familiar with the mistletoe tradition. What is the color of the berries of the plant?  White.
  • How does Santa Claus go back up the chimney to continue his journey of delivering gifts?  He places his finger on the side of his nose, gives a smile and a nod.
  • How many points does a snowflake traditionally have?  Six.
  • Name the eight original Reindeer.  Blitzen, Comet, Cupid, Dasher, Prancer, Vixen, Dancer, and Donner.
