Celebrating Henri Matisse’s Birthday

On this day in 1869, legendary artist Henri Matisse was born.

Today marks the anniversary of Henri Matisse’s birthday.  Matisse is best known for being one of the most revolutionary and influential artists of the early 20th century.  During his 60-year career, Matisse worked with various media, from painting to sculpture to printmaking.  While he often depicted traditional subjects, he transformed them with expressive use of color and exaggerated form.

In honor of this great artist’s birthday, let’s enjoy some of his most meaningful quotes.

“I do not literally paint that table, but the emotion it produces upon me.”

“What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity…something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.”

“There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted.”

“A young painter who cannot liberate himself from the influence of past generations is digging his own grave.”

“It has bothered me all my life that I do not paint like everybody else.”

“Never ruin a good painting with the truth.”

“There are always flowers for those who want to see them.”

“Derive happiness in oneself from a good day’s work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us.”

“Instinct must be thwarted just as one prunes the branches of a tree so that it will grow better.”

“I don’t paint things. I only paint the difference between things.”

“Exactitude is not truth.”
