Celebrating Boxing Day

Hi, Maria Sanchez here of the Maria Sanchez Show. Today I want to give you a bit of a history lesson. No doubt you’ve heard of Boxing Day, or at the very least noticed it printed on your desk calendar. But do you have any idea of what this holiday is all about?

The day following Christmas Day, December 26, is Boxing Day. It is observed in Canada, the UK, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Hong Kong, as well as a few other commonwealth nations. While the name leads one to think the holiday is about the sport of boxing, it’s actually about the sport of giving. The origin of Boxing Day comes from the day when employees traditionally boxed up gifts for their employees. Today, however, it has become one of the biggest shopping days for those countries that celebrate it. Consider Boxing Day the Canadian equivalent of Black Friday in the U.S.

Here at the Maria Sanchez Show we love the holidays and all that it encompasses. Contact me to find out more about our show or to discuss your favorite Boxing Day memories.
