Celebrate Summer Solstice

Taking a look at the Farmer’s Almanac online, I encountered a neat little article about the summer solstice, complete with recommendations for celebrating it. Many people don’t think to commorate the solstice, or even know what the solstice is. In the northern hemisphere, summer solstice represents the first official day of summer. It is the day when the sun is at its farthest point north of the equator.

This year summer solstice will take place on June 21. Conveniently, the solstice takes place on a Saturday.

This is a time to celebrate fun in the sun and the great outdoors. Here are a few suggestions for celebrating the solstice:

  1. This is such a popular outdoor activity, it seems like most people are seeking any excuse to have a good barbeque. Invite family and friends to your house, light up the grill, let the kids play games. This is a time to celebrate food and family and the earth’s beautiful bounty.

On this beautiful day, be sure to let lots of light into your home. Throw open the windows and let in the fresh air. Listen with joy as your friends and family chat in surroundings, and the kids run and play.

Then, when the sun goes down, keep the light burning bright with a bonfire. Tell stories, roast marshmallows, just like at summer camp.

What will you be doing on your first full day of summer?
