Celebrate International Literacy Day With Us

Celebrate International Literacy Day With Us (Sept. 8)

Learn how we can support the efforts to raise literacy rates on International Literacy Day.

International Literacy Day is observed on September 8th.  The purpose behind this day is to celebrate and honor the international efforts and progress made to increase global literacy rates.  International Literacy Day also looks to address current challenges to literacy and invites people to think of inventive solutions to these problems.  This September 8th, get involved by trying some of these suggestions.

-Tutor someone.  Take the time to help an adult or child who is learning to read.  Volunteer at a local school or library and offer your services.  This is a great way to make a difference in your local community.

-Organize a fundraiser.  Set up a bake sale or other fundraising event to raise money for a reading or literacy program near you.  Also consider asking ask people to give up their old books for donation.

-Host a Read-a-thon.  Encourage members of your community to read as many books as they can in a given time frame.  Offer prices and incentives to keep participants motivated.

Follow these suggestions to join us at The Maria Sanchez Show in celebrating International Literacy Day.  Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown. Tune in on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PDT/7:00 p.m. EDT.
