It’s Essential That We Take Care of Ourselves This National Staying Healthy Month

Let’s create healthy habits that we can stick to!

Many of us may have resolved to take better care of ourselves in 2020.  This is why January is recognized as National Staying Healthy Month.  This month encourages us to establish healthy habits that we may be able to stick to all year long.  For those of us who want to prioritize self-care this year, here are some of the suggestions that we suggest to consider implementing this January.

  • Consume a Balanced Diet

Proper nutrition is essential for a healthy lifestyle.  This is why it’s important to challenge ourselves to eat a balanced diet of unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, and dairy.  When we eat better, it’s likely we will have more energy, a stronger immune system, and feel better overall.

  • Get Enough Sleep

Many of us fail to get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep a night.  When we deprive ourselves of sleep, research suggests that we may be compromising our physical health as well as potentially causing damage too ur mental and emotional wellbeing.  To ensure that we are getting an adequate amount of sleep every night, it’s suggested that we try to maintain a consistent bedtime and develop a nighttime routine that may assist us to wind down and fall asleep easier.

  • Be Vigilant About Our Use of Technology

One of the greatest culprits in denying ourselves true rest and relaxation may be our dependency on technology.  It is suggested that we avoid any interaction with our cell phone, tablet, and computer for two hours prior to going to bed.  And by all means, turn off the sound and keep the devices away from the bed. It isn’t necessary to check them if we awaken in the middle of the night because that can interrupt our successful efforts to fall back asleep.  As the AT&T slogan suggests, “it can wait.”

  • Exercise Regularly

While it’s likely that we all have busy schedules, it’s important that we make time for physical activity.  While being active can help us burn calories and help us lose weight, this isn’t the only benefit of exercise.  Living an active lifestyle can also improve our mental health and help us stave off injuries and serious medical complications.
