Book Lovers Unite! It’s National Read a Book Day!

September 6th marks a day completely dedicated to celebrating our love of books and reading.

Today is National Read a Book Day and, as the name suggests, this day is all about breaking out our favorite books and settling down for a good read. Too often we neglect reading in favor of taking care of everyday tasks or for other forms of entertainment such as watching television or scrolling through social media. However, on this day, let’s rekindle our love for the written word and spread the joys of reading to those around us. Here are some of the things that we can do to celebrate National Read a Book Day.

Read a Book

The most obvious way to participate today is by reading a good book. However, not all of us enjoy settling down with a good read. Luckily, with modern technology, there are many other ways to enjoy a good story aside from reading. For instance, we can listen to a good audiobook. This is especially great for those of us who spend a lot of time in our cars or for those of us that want to enjoy a good book while getting some chores done.

Donate Books

We can also celebrate National Read a Book Day by giving others the opportunity to read. One way we can accomplish this is by collecting and donating books to our local libraries. By helping to replenish their stock, we can help spread a love of reading to our whole community.

Read to Someone

Reading together is a great way to strengthen bonds and celebrate our love of reading with the people we care about the most. Whether we host a book club with our friends or simply read aloud to our children and other family members, there are many ways in which reading can become a group activity.

Electronic Books

Our tablets and other electronic devices offer opportunities to read without having to carry a book with us. Standing in a long line at the post office or a big box store, we can pull out our handy and lightweight devices and use these stolen moments to keep our reading alive!

Added Bonus

Studies have suggested that reading is closely related to intelligence and vocabulary acquisition. In other words, reading has benefits other than merely entertaining us with what we are consuming, but the added benefit of boosting our IQ and the sort of words that we choose to use when communicating.
