How We May be Able to Avoid Food Poisoning This Summer

Here are some food safety tips forthis summer.

Every year, 48 million Americans fall ill after eating contaminated food.  Because summer is a popular time for outdoor dining, the risk for food poisoning is usuallyhigher during this season.  To ensure that we and our loved ones do not get sick this summer, here are some of the food safety tips that we suggest.

  • Wash Hands Frequently

While we all know how important it is to wash our hands before we begin preparing or serving food, it’s important to also be washing our hands throughout the cooking process.  This is especially true if we are handling raw meat, fish, or eggs.  Washing our hands between each step in the food prep process will likely help us avoid cross-contamination and bacteria transfer that may make people sick.

  • Clean Food Prep Surfaces

Much like our hands, our cooking surfaces maypose a risk for cross-contamination.  This is why we strongly recommend cleaning and disinfecting our food prep surfaces before, after, and during the cooking process.  We suggest using food-safe cleansers before and during the cooking process, and then following up by disinfecting with a diluted bleach solution after the cooking is complete.

  • Keep Food Cool

Before storing food in our refrigerators, we suggest that the temperature is set between 32° and 40°. This ensures that all perishable foods are kept cool enough to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.  If we are serving cold dishes like salsas, salads, and things with mayonnaise-based sauces, then it’s recommended to keep them in the fridge until it’s time to serve them.  This will likely ensure that these dishes do not get warm and grow bacteria.

We at The Maria Sanchez Show hope that you will practice these food safety suggestions to help avoid food poisoning this summer. Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown. Tune in on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PDT/7:00 p.m. EDT.
